Regional leaders are playing a game of chicken, pretending this isn’t happening, holding out, hoping against hope they are not indicted by the feds, thinking not being legally indicted makes them immune from indictment in the eyes of the community. It doesn’t. None of them called it out. They either engaged, rubberstamped corruption and/or turned a blind eye. Either way, they have shown themselves to be unfit and untrustworthy. And now they’re putting us through more shit by not following John Muhammad’s lead and resigning. The vultures are already circling Lewis Reed’s dead political carcass.
Federal investigations take years and the investigation that spurred this round of indictments began years ago. And the prosecutor is the same prosecutor that got Stenger, someone VERY familiar with regional politics. Who knows what Stenger told the feds.Or Almuttan, (the man that paid the bribes) told them about city and county leaders. We now know he owns property and does business in the city and county.
Given what we know now it would be foolish to think the bribery and corruption exposed by the feds is limited to Reed, Boyd or Muhammad or that Almuttan is the only businessman that had city and county leaders on the payroll. Or to think that Tony Weaver is the only Democrat or political appointee in north county that was scamming. Or to think that the level of corruption exposed went unnoticed by the mayor, County Exec and others in City Hall and the County Council. Or to think the same type of corruption didn’t happen when multimillion dollar deals were on the table.
Or that it didn’t spread to the prosecutor’s office or beyond. Everything and everybody is suspect. And leaders continue to move like none of this is happening, business as usual further angering the community in the process.
