Protesters are getting checks from a class action lawsuit against police for this kettling incident. And just like that, the movement that began here is dead, things are worse, police are murdering with impunity and we’re worse off. Black leadership in the city has been greatly diminished. Positions fought hard for and held by blacks, now once again held by whites and even a black Republican. The President of the Board of Aldermen is no longer black. The police chief is no longer black. The new circuit attorney is a black Republican.
The downtown jail situation is worse, the city is sabotaging it’s own civilian review panel and ducking Sunshine requests. The new progressive mayor is no different that previous mayors in that regard.
16 year old Darryl Ross was shot 18 times by police. Protesters did not take to the streets. Now we know why, part of a settlement agreement… And this will always be the se as long as our side settles for a bag instead of justice.
