☕ Morning fam,
Somber Mother’s Day in the child murder capital, but you wouldn’t know it with all the hype about the city retaining control of STLPD after Republicans allowed the session to end without a vote granting the city a reprieve until the session starts by which time crime and policing will be worse and we go through this all over again.
I must caution about premature high fiving and/or declarations of ‘mission accomplished’. We’ve been here before. Lost count of how many times ‘victory’ was declared only to have it snatched away by the jaws of defeat… homelessness, bail reform, jail reform… Kim Gardner’s tenure, hello? Plus let’s not forget Republicans have the votes. “It ain’t over til it’s over.” in my Lenny Kravitz voice.
The issue of state control ain’t over. It will come back, the same way the issue that is Kim Gardner came back just days after the mayor’s statement touting her resignation. Gardner’s response of letting a suspected murderer go free proved otherwise.
Who knows what deal the city had to make with state Republicans? The fact the deal was made with state Republicans and not STLPD speaks volumes. If officers quit in response like prosecutors in Kim Gardner’s office, the state may have no choice to intervene or send the the national guard.
This isn’t a victory, think of it more like getting a reprieve on death row, just ain’t dying today.
