Our $2.2 Trillion Boycott Has One Fatal Flaw

Our $2.2 Trillion Boycott Has One Fatal Flaw, and nobody leading the charge wants to say it out loud. After Asian store owner Rick Chow walked free in the killing of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton, Black America did what it always does when the verdict stings — it got loud, it got organized for a weekend, and it pointed at that $2.2 trillion in annual spending power like it was a loaded weapon. And the boycott of Asian-owned businesses is righteous. Pulling our dollars out of stores that don’t respect us is the right instinct. But The Angryman is going to tell you the part the pastors and the hashtag generals keep skipping: a boycott is a reaction, not a strategy, and the fatal flaw in this $2.2 trillion boycott is not them — it is us. Rick Chow did not break our economy. Our lack of follow-through did. We have run this exact play before, from the Latasha Harlins days to right now, and every single time the cameras leave we march right back to the same counter, the same beauty supply, the same corner store, and call it forgiveness when it is really just a lack of discipline. The Standard (the consistent application of accountability regardless of who is being judged) says you cannot demand respect from people while propping up a community that will not invest in itself for longer than two weeks. The Angryman has been saying this for years: boycotting their store is step one, but building ours, banking ours, and protecting our own with that same energy is the whole game. A $2.2 trillion boycott means nothing if it cannot outlast a news cycle. If we can boycott them but will not build for us, then the boycott was never about power — it was about feelings, and feelings expire. Discipline is the only thing that ever moved a dollar, and that is the one fatal flaw nobody in this boycott wants to own.
