A lady I met after one of the Women March’s where I was keynote speakers wanted to begin LEARNING and LISTENING about issues that we were discussing because after all, she can CHOOSE TO OR NOT. After understanding, she took my son and my new pride and joy (Pooh Bear) under her wing. She did ALL of 4 of his working grandparents couldn’t do. SHE TOOK GOOD CARE OF THEM, NO STRESS OR STRAIN. She and I were total strangers and then POVERTY became too much for her so, her limit was $30,000.00 in 15 months…….smh

Greetings! I am elated that light has been shed on the Education Inequality in America. I am a lifelong resident of the city of East Saint Louis, IL. I chose to move back home after obtaining higher learning to educate, empower, and expose our children in the East Saint Louis, IL school system of the wealth of knowledge I obtained. I had no idea about the “game” I have been hearing about and I had no idea about the “DEEP ROOTS OF POLITICS” within OUR impoverished communities. I mean when I saw children FIRST I honestly thought that’s what was meant….ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!! I had a college professor to point fingers are “OUR” organizations as doing “photo ops” but NOT really doing anything about the state of children and families within our inner cities and now that I am home, the message is CLEAR.
I am the face of the sequester, I am the face of homelessness, I am the face of the nutritionally challenged, I am the face of the underemployment, I am the face of the college educated, I am the face of America, I am the face of a devoted voter, I am the face of a wife, I am the face of a mom, I am the face of an advocate, I am the face of one who love her community (East St. Louis, IL), I am the face of a substitute, I am the face of one who care about the broken, abused, hurting, and mis-educated children, I am the face of one who know that our children deserve better and should have better within our educational systems, I am the face of one who REFUSE to accept NO or WE CAN’T as an answer, I am the face of one that just don’t get how those in decision making positions, organized on “behalf” of those in our impoverished areas do not execute executive order on behalf of those who are voiceless and should be advocated for along with those who were born and raised in these very communities but chose to leave and NOT look back, uplift, and infuse the very residents they speak ill of or look down upon with the tools they need to see beyond their impoverished community, I am an educator who want, desire, and should have change in the schools so that I too can reside in a community where the children we educate TODAY can be the future LEADERS of tomorrow that understand that THEY TOO have a significant role to play other than being CONSUMERS in this global world! Our children are in these school systems where in THEIR world, TECHNOLOGY is KING; and they don’t have a COMPUTER SCIENCE teacher at the elementary level. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!
I was taught that “education” was my ticket out of poverty, education held the key to wherever I wanted to go. I was told to look like this, speak like that, you know perfect the game to “get ahead” and that didn’t work and now I am talking to MY AMERICA! We have sat around for a while and allowed our Board of Educations, States, and School leaders to chronically fail us like it is normalcy. These entities should be held accountable for failing OUR children and families generationally, habitually, and without care. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!
We too want and deserve what is best for OUR children and we too have a sense of expectancy for our three children to surpass us. We are NOT asking for handouts but educators with high expectations and standards. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH with the excuses. I have grown irritated with (majority) of the educators and board members BREACHING their contracts and providing EDUCATIONAL MALPRACTICE continually and seemingly it is ALRIGHT with those who “claim” they support African American issues. I am realizing that a great deal of Board members and educators own children do NOT attend this failing school system. It will behoove you to FACE this fact and give OUR children what they so RIGHTFULLY deserve and that is a MEANINGFUL EDUCATION should NOT be for the privileged but for ALL. Being financially challenged and intellectually ripe is NOT synonymous……
It is NOW TIME that someone hold the ILLINOIS STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION reliable for CONSTANTLY FAILING OUR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. They being the OVERSEER of the EAST SAINT LOUIS SCHOOL BOARD and our organizations have also allowed them to fail us as well. OUR children OUR future are continually being failed. This “HIGHLY QUALIFIED” teacher jargon is a bunch of rubbish. Let us look at the test scores ALONE. We can take the SAME students and place them in a “better” school district and once they get the “culture” of the school then they too “gets it” and “perform or out perform” those who are served HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION on a “silver platter.” The affluent areas do not lower their expectations because they are in or from poverty they EXPECT them to RISE UP to their HIGH EXPECTATIONS and STANDARDS and our children DO IT EVERY TIME.
It is asinine that I MUST go outside of my zip code to find “good education” for our children in 2013. Our children are just as technologically savvy as anyone else, our children are just as academically ready as anyone else, our children are linguistically capable as anyone else, I children are able to embrace difference in culture as anyone else, our children are just as eager to learn as anyone else, they are capable to handle whatever is offered to them just as anyone else, and they are being pushed aside, NOT provided the educational opportunity and exposure UNLIKE others. I am in tune with where this country is going and we are PURPOSEFULLY NOT teaching our children other languages starting at the Pre-K/K levels or computer science so they too can perfect coding. I do not want to hear about funding; ISBE has watched funds mismanaged in our areas and our FUTURE is being hurt the most.
Research is ALWAYS proven, statistics is ALWAYS shown, and speculations is ALWAYS evident but the VERY VOICE that should be HEARD is the poor. Because one is financially challenged does NOT mean YOU know what is BEST it just mean YOU have a certain power over those without. IT IS NOW TIME TO SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! ENOUGH of speaking out on the poor behalf, ENOUGH of collecting statistical data but the POOR has NO input, ENOUGH with having meetings but the VERY target group being discussed is NOT sitting around the table. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
We have been on “HIGH ALTERT” discussing mental illness within the USA, heck that is NORMALCY in OUR area. Unless our families are taught how to effectively utilize Social Services agencies then they will continue to find “quick” fixes and NEVER become whole adults. I honestly believe that if we started with parenting classes, and AUTHENTICALLY EDUCATE our parents and holding them responsible and accountable THEN and ONLY THEN will WE SEE CHANGE and UNDERSTAND WHAT WE SHOULD HAVE!
WE have sat around time and time and time again and made a plethora of excuses of WHY our parents in East Saint Louis can’t be involved within their children’s education or failed to hold them responsible to support their children and I say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. They do what they want, when they want, how they want, and with the resources, they want. WE NEED TO RAISE THE STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS for PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT. NO LONGER should parents have a choice, option, or whatever if they will ADVOCATE for, SEE about, and become ENGAGED with THEIR children’s education. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

Mission
The Illinois State Board of Education will provide leadership, assistance, resources and advocacy so that every student is prepared to succeed in careers and postsecondary education, and share accountability for doing so with districts and schools.
This mission statement and goal is obviously for “certain” area codes because OUR children are NOT seeing this on their behalf. It would be wonderful if they did because their learning environment, education attainment, and self worth would be sky high. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! Look at OUR school district’s website; it should have ACCESS for PARENTS considering we are techno savvy as well. Check out our clubs and activity’s page, even if students are NOT academically gifted at least offer clubs and activities that will cater to their passions and natural talents and partner them with businesses or clubs that will realize they too have something to offer and bring to the table so they too can reach THEIR full potential.
P.S. I do not want to fail my children, I am unable to climb out of this unfortunate circumstance I am in because the Government took my refund so what I thought could be a little hope, plummeted and I am coming to you to really do something about we Americans who are struggling and trying but seemingly is being pushed farther into poverty.
