A May 2022 report released by Rutgers CLiME shows that for several years, 47% of Newark’s single family homes in African American neighborhoods were purchased by three corporations and one anonymous investor. The analysis says that the tactical purchases contributed to the housing crisis in the city, and has led to the complete dismantling of its Black middle class. With homeless surging in Newark, as well as poverty, we speak with historian and sociologist Afrika about the economic and political ramifications of this issue.
