In a disturbing case underscoring the systemic issues within law enforcement, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will pay a $25 million settlement for Isaias Cervantes, a disabled man left paralyzed by sheriff’s deputies in 2021. Despite pleas for mental health assistance during the 911 call, deputies aggressively confronted Cervantes, ultimately shooting him and forever altering his life. The incident epitomizes the failures of police to adequately handle individuals with disabilities, opting for force over compassion and exacerbating rather than de-escalating the situation. Despite clear evidence of mishandling and disproportionate use of force, the District Attorney’s Office declined to press charges, underscoring a troubling trend of impunity within law enforcement.
