Remembering Rosemary Sanders: A Life Dedicated to Music and Faith

Rosemary Sanders, a cherished figure in South Bend, Indiana, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, music, and faith. Born on March 26, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois, Rosemary moved to South Bend at the tender age of five with her parents, Rolley and Helen Sanders.

From an early age, Rosemary displayed an extraordinary talent for music, particularly with the violin. She began her musical journey with private lessons at the Chicago Sherwood School of Music. Her passion and skill led her to perform with the Riley High School Orchestra, from which she graduated in 1939. Her talent was further recognized when she was accepted into the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, where she not only played but also shared her knowledge by teaching other students privately.

Music was not Rosemary’s only passion; she was deeply religious. A long-standing member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where her parents were founding members, she lived her life with faith at its core. She was known for her regular church attendance and her commitment to her spiritual beliefs.

Rosemary’s personal life was equally rich. She married Graham Henry Sr. from Old Harbor Bay, Jamaica, West Indies. Together, they raised a family that now spans generations. She is survived by her children, Graham M. Henry (Muriel) and Helen Jean Henry Ursery (Roy fiancé), along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who continue her legacy across Indiana and beyond.

Her grandchildren include Michael K. Blanchard (Tamara), Graham Henry III, Christina Henry Martin (Dexter), Isaiah Javiar Henry, Graham Henry IV (Alexis), Orion Henry, William M. Johnson (Eleana), Hillarhry J. Johnson, and Kelley D. Blount. The family she built was one of her greatest joys, expanding to over 16 great-grandchildren.

In her later years, Rosemary was cared for by the compassionate staff at the Center for Hospice Care, with special thanks to Maralee and Kathy, and at St. Paul’s Retirement Community, where Amanda and Simon provided her with a loving home for the past 14 years.

Rosemary’s life was a testament to the power of music and the strength of faith. Her contributions to her community through her music and her church are indelible. Her family, particularly her children Graham M. Henry Jr. and Helen J. Henry Ursery RN BSN, who now serves as a hospice nurse, continue to uphold her memory with pride and gratitude.

As we remember Rosemary Sanders, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by melodies that touched many hearts and a faith that inspired a community. Her memory will continue to resonate through her music, her teachings, and the loving family she nurtured.
