“Serving His Country Didn’t Save Him From the Racism of This Country”

Roger Fortson, a 23-year-old Black U.S. Air Force airman, was tragically shot and killed by a Florida sheriff’s deputy after simply answering his door. Despite serving his country, Fortson wasn’t safe from police violence. The deputy, who claimed self-defense, shot Fortson multiple times as he held a gun pointed at the ground, not even giving him a chance to respond. Fortson’s family is outraged, questioning why a trained officer would open fire so quickly and why the deputy was at his apartment in the first place. This heartbreaking incident proves that even those who serve and protect the country aren’t protected from the very cops who are supposed to serve and protect them.
