Tense emotions filled the room at Athens-Clarke County Police Department Headquarters during a press conference where Athens Mayor, Kelly Girtz, attempted to speak following the gruesome DELETION of 22 year old Augusta University student, Laken Riley. Protesters were rightfully upset at the Mayor, calling for his resignation, along with the District Attorney, Deborah Gonzalez, for allowing sanctuary/welcome city status to continue for illegal migrants in Athens. Girtz even tried to DENY that sanctuary city status was a thing, even though the law CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES that it is not only a thing, but was passed in 2019!
