House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is drawing a sharper line against the Democratic Socialists of America as the battle over the future of the Democratic Party intensifies ahead of the 2026 midterms.
In a new Meet the Press interview, Jeffries was pressed directly on whether Democratic Socialists belong inside the Democratic Party. His answer was revealing: “I don’t support the DSA agenda.” Jeffries specifically distanced himself from positions involving defunding the police, open borders and abolishing the Senate, while acknowledging that candidates elected through Democratic primaries will become members of what he described as a “broad” House Democratic caucus.
The comments come after a remarkable series of Democratic primary defeats that have strengthened the party’s socialist and progressive wing. In New York, two Jeffries-backed incumbents — Rep. Dan Goldman and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Adriano Espaillat — lost their primaries, while DSA-backed Claire Valdez also won the Democratic nomination for an open Brooklyn congressional seat.
And the fight is getting personal.
At Valdez’s June victory party, supporters reportedly erupted into chants of “YOU’RE NEXT!” when Jeffries appeared on television. DSA member Asad Dandia went even further, writing of Jeffries: “Good. We’re coming.” NYC-DSA co-chair Grace Mausser has said the organization is effectively “surrounding” Jeffries with socialist elected officials in Brooklyn and has not ruled out a DSA-backed primary challenge against him in 2028 or 2030.
This isn’t entirely theoretical. DSA member and New York City Councilman Chi Ossé actually filed paperwork to challenge Jeffries for his congressional seat in the 2026 Democratic primary before withdrawing after the DSA declined to endorse the campaign.
Meanwhile, Jeffries could face another problem if Democrats capture the House: his path to becoming Speaker. A growing group of Democratic candidates — including several associated with the socialist/progressive insurgency — have refused to commit to supporting Jeffries for Speaker or have openly opposed his leadership.
The policy divide is becoming increasingly difficult to hide. During the same Meet the Press interview, Jeffries repeatedly declined to embrace abolishing ICE, instead calling for dramatic reforms including removing masks, requiring body cameras and judicial warrants, and allowing ICE agents to face state and local prosecution for alleged crimes.
Jeffries also broke with another major priority of the party’s left wing: Medicare for All. Although he previously co-sponsored Medicare for All legislation, Jeffries confirmed that he does not currently support the legislation.
The result is a Democratic Party increasingly confronting two competing visions: Jeffries’ broader coalition of progressives, moderates and Blue Dogs versus an emboldened democratic socialist movement that has already defeated establishment incumbents and is openly discussing where to strike next.
