On August 4, 2026, Chicago Flips Red met with Mr. and Mrs. Price, a married couple of 16 years raising five children in Chicago’s 28th Ward.
During the migrant crisis, they say they went through Chicago’s shelter system while the city was spending more than $700,000 a day on migrant shelters. According to the family, the shelter system attempted to separate Mr. Price from his wife and children.
Today, they say they’re still struggling. Mr. Price is searching for stable work, Mrs. Price commutes by public transportation to a job in the suburbs, and they say they’re now competing for jobs in their own community.
Meanwhile, Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration says it invested more than $2 billion on the West Side and delivered more than 800 projects.
Alderman Jason Ervin, who represents the 28th Ward and chairs the City Council Committee on Budget and Government Operations, voted in favor of the city’s migrant funding measures and is now seeking another term.
As election season approaches, 28th Ward voters will decide whether these priorities reflected the needs of longtime Chicago families.
