🔍 VIDEO SUMMARY:
🚨 Lawrence, Massachusetts Mayor Brian DePeña is facing a major federal criminal case after being arrested and charged with **wire fraud and money laundering** in an alleged scheme involving **$1.5 MILLION in COVID-era relief funds**.

Federal prosecutors allege DePeña obtained the government-backed money through his tire business, Tenares Tire Services, but ultimately diverted substantial portions of the funds for purposes including **paying off mortgages, personal tax obligations, and financing his 2021 campaign for mayor**. Authorities allege more than **$880,000 went toward mortgages** and approximately **$90,000 was used for campaign expenses**. DePeña has been charged, not convicted, and the allegations will have to be proven in court.

The story became even more chaotic outside federal court in Boston. DePeña attempted to avoid reporters as his attorney confronted the media — and the attorney’s vehicle then reportedly rear-ended another vehicle while leaving the courthouse.

But the arrest adds another dimension to a controversy that was already following DePeña.

The Dominican Republic-born mayor has faced criticism over his **limited English proficiency despite serving as the mayor of an American city**. The issue gained national attention after DePeña requested a Spanish interpreter during a Massachusetts POST Commission proceeding in 2025. Earlier reporting also documented that DePeña prefers conducting interviews in Spanish and that his spoken English is considerably more limited than his comprehension.

DePeña himself has acknowledged the issue, saying, **”I don’t speak perfect English,”** while arguing that his language limitations have not prevented him from conducting business or communicating with government officials. GBH previously reported that DePeña generally did not speak English in his day-to-day work and quoted him saying that he practices English because it is important in America.

Now the two-term mayor is confronting a much more serious challenge.

Federal agents arrived at DePeña’s Lawrence home early Friday morning and took him into custody. After appearing before a federal judge, he was released under conditions that include surrendering his passport and remaining in Massachusetts. His attorney says **DePeña has no intention of resigning as mayor**.

The case has renewed questions about political leadership and public trust in Lawrence, a city that has experienced previous corruption scandals involving municipal officials.

Was this simply alleged misuse of pandemic relief money by one politician — or does Lawrence have a deeper problem with accountability at City Hall?
