Nearly 1 in 12 criminal defendants released on ankle monitors in Chicago have reportedly gone AWOL, according to new data released by Cook County authorities, raising renewed concerns about violent crime and public safety in the city. Officials revealed that 246 out of more than 3,000 defendants placed on electronic monitoring are currently missing or no longer actively wearing their ankle monitors. The alarming report comes after prosecutors accused repeat offender Alphanso Talley — who was allegedly on electronic monitoring — of murdering Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew in April. Authorities say hundreds of defendants in the monitoring program are facing serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, sexual assault, and aggravated battery. Cook County Chief Judge Charles Beach defended the system while acknowledging law enforcement is actively searching for missing offenders, as critics continue blasting Chicago’s soft-on-crime policies and failed criminal justice reforms.
