Karmelo Anthony took Austin Metcalf’s life, was convicted of murder, and got 35 years — and instead of calling that what it is, the culture ran around screaming “public lynching” like the boy was sent away forever. The Angryman is going to break down why that is backwards. In Texas, a murder conviction can carry 99 years to life. The jury could have buried him and they didn’t. People have gotten more time for less, and young men his exact age have caught harsher sentences for the same charge — so spare me the lynching talk. That was not the system being cruel to Karmelo; that was the system being lenient, and the only reason nobody wants to admit Karmelo got off light is that admitting it means admitting the whole “they’re railroading this boy” narrative was a lie. The Standard (the consistent application of accountability regardless of who is being judged) says a life was taken and the punishment was, if anything, merciful for what he was found guilty of.
