There’s a word that used to define Black womanhood and April Chapman says we’ve lost it. That word is refined.
In this segment from Disturbing the Peace, Pastor John Amanchukwu and April Chapman — Christian conservative commentator and host of Unshakable with April Chapman — react to a viral clip about beauty, image, and aesthetics in the Black community, and April makes a case you don’t hear often enough. Looking back at her own great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother — and at icons like Lauryn Hill, Patrice Rushen, and Tisha Campbell — she describes women who were “fit, poised, stylish, and classy,” who wore their own hair or wore it in a way that looked like “enhanced versions of themselves” rather than cartoon caricatures of someone else. Her point: real beauty was never about the most effort or the most accessories. “You don’t have to work hard to be that. You really just need to embrace yourself and embrace how God created you.”
The conversation goes deeper than hair and lashes. April traces the rebellion — the instinct to do the opposite of what godly men actually find beautiful — back to the fall in the garden and the daughters-of-Eve nature every one of us inherited. She’s honest about her own need to crucify the flesh daily. And she lands on the part of this that matters most: the fashion icon in a young girl’s life is her mama. Young women model what they see, which means the real question isn’t about any one artist — it’s whether the older women in the culture are teaching the younger women, the way Scripture calls them to (Titus 2), or competing with them. As April puts it, “they’re not laughing with us — they’re laughing at us,” and the tragedy is that Black beauty has always been the thing the world envied and imitated. “We can’t even get you to look like yourself.”
