They’re telling you Gary residents shot at NIPSCO and that’s why the power took so long. Here’s what actually happened and what it doesn’t explain.
The derecho hit Northwest Indiana on August 11, 2026, with 99 mph winds and tornadoes, knocking out power to roughly 375,000 customers. On night four, someone fired two shots at a NIPSCO assessment SUV in Gary. No one was hurt. NIPSCO paused, brought in police, and crews were back out the same day.
That’s the entire incident. It’s also the entire “evidence” behind the theory that Gary brought this on itself.
NIPSCO’s main restoration phase wrapped August 25 14 days after the storm hit. As of today, roughly 2,400 customers are still without power. Neighboring towns Portage, Lake Station, Hobart, Munster went through the same storm with no shooting incident and comparable timelines.
One night doesn’t explain two weeks. The real story is what it always is: which communities get infrastructure investment before disaster hits, and which ones don’t.
