Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield is facing growing questions surrounding allegations connected to a former boyfriend, money exchanged during her years on Detroit City Council and relationships involving city business.
Sheffield denies wrongdoing and says money returned to her by former boyfriend Marvin Walker represented repayment of personal loans. Walker has made disputed allegations claiming something very different.
But one part of this story immediately caught my attention.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison personally asked activist Jadante Smith to remove Facebook posts involving Sheffield and Walker.
Smith refused.
Roughly two weeks later, Detroit police seized his phone pursuant to a search warrant involving what police say was an unrelated alleged threat. Smith believes the action was retaliation. Detroit police deny any connection between the phone seizure and his posts.
Police also sought a broader search covering approximately six months of phone data — a request prosecutors reportedly rejected.
So I have questions.
Why was Detroit’s police chief personally concerned about those posts?
Who was he trying to protect?
And how much of what is being alleged about Sheffield’s years on city council can actually be substantiated?
Detroit has fought hard to rebuild its reputation.
The last thing the city needs is another reason for residents to wonder whether powerful insiders are protecting powerful insiders.
