Why does a Black kid who talks right, studies, and shows up on time get called white?
Who decided that? And who does it serve?
I used to think doing well made me a sellout. So I did everything I was taught being Black was supposed to be. I changed how I talked, how I dressed, the music I played. I went and found the friends. And it led me straight to smoking, drinking, and trouble by 15.
Here’s the part that took me 20 years to understand: I didn’t fail at the lesson. I passed it. That’s the problem.
This is the story of where “acting white” actually comes from, why it turns doing good into a betrayal, and why chasing it took me all the way to the top of hip hop and dropped me right back where I started. It’s the most personal video I’ve made. If you’ve ever been called a sellout, an Oreo, or told you were “talking white” for using your brain, this one is for you.
We get into the 1960s roots of it, what Huey Newton and the Panthers really said about successful Black people, the Roots scene we now turn on each other, and the one thing that actually pulled me out: consistent consequences, plus learning how to change my mind.
