Rent is so high that Americans are living in sheds after being priced out of houses, and some of those sheds are going for $1,500 a month. In this video I use the shed phenomenon as evidence of something much bigger than a viral trend. Harvard’s rental housing data shows 49% of renter households were cost burdened in 2024, and 26% spent more than half their income on rent and utilities. The number of units renting for at least $2,000 grew by 5.8 million between 2014 and 2024. If you are paying more than you can afford just to keep a roof over your head, or watching people you know move back in with their parents, this breaks down exactly how we got here.
1. How much of your income is going to rent right now?
2. Would you live in a shed or a tiny home if it cut your housing cost in half?
3. Does the housing market fix this on its own, or does it take policy?
