Hours after the shooting, officials were still discussing statements, talking points, and when the mayor would appear at a police briefing.
One staff member ultimately summed up the frustration after the late-night news conference: “Just wish it hadn’t taken five hours.”
Meanwhile, residents in South Seattle say a sprawling homeless encampment near Rainier Beach has grown completely out of control. Neighbors report fires, stolen property, stolen vehicles, suspected criminal activity, environmental hazards, people allegedly becoming sick from groundwater, and trees being cut down as the encampment expands across multiple properties.
Residents say they have repeatedly contacted the city, but officials currently have no immediate plans to clear the encampment. One neighbor called the situation a “humanitarian crisis,” while another warned that tragedy could eventually result if conditions continue deteriorating.
The controversy also raises questions about Mayor Katie Wilson’s push for additional tiny-home villages. Residents near the existing site argue that instead of reducing surrounding encampments, conditions have gotten worse.
And the bad news isn’t limited to public safety.
Washington State officials say WARN layoff notices are up approximately 40% compared with the same period last year. Amazon, Uber, Qualtrics, Sunkist and other employers have recently announced layoffs affecting hundreds of workers. State economists caution that part of the increase comes from expanded reporting requirements, but they also acknowledge genuine weakness in sectors including technology and information.
Perhaps even more concerning: Washington’s job growth has reportedly slowed dramatically, with the state’s chief economist describing the pace as “historically slow” and warning that sluggish growth could continue for several years.
