According to the report, investigators are examining allegations involving whether Walker received city funds or special treatment because of his relationship with the mayor. Sheffield has denied that any illegal activity involving city funds occurred.
The Detroit Office of Inspector General is also examining what happened after the photos were posted. Smith says Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison personally called him and asked him to remove the pictures. Bettison has acknowledged making the call but says he was acting as a private citizen rather than in his official capacity as police chief. Smith further alleges that Detroit police later retaliated against him and unlawfully seized his phone. Police say officers were executing a warrant connected to allegations that Smith threatened another person’s life, and Bettison denies wrongdoing.
Now the mayor herself is being confronted with questions as reporters wait for the Inspector General’s findings. Sheffield is standing behind her police chief while refusing to go deeper into the allegations until the investigation is complete.
