In this episode on Disturbing the Peace, Stephen Davis sits in for John Amanchukwu to host Ron Coleman — New York and New Jersey-based litigation attorney with more than three decades of federal and state court experience.
Ron’s response is sharper than most reaction commentary on this footage. He acknowledges these particular subjects don’t represent the vast majority of Americans — even living in New York City, you don’t actually walk into a street full of this. But the college campus is a different story. “The kids all understand that they absolutely cannot answer that America is a great country or the greatest country in the world. That’s like matter meets antimatter for them. The best they can come up with when asked where they’d rather go is JV America — Canada.”
The diagnosis goes deeper. Ron points to NYC Mayor Mamdani as evidence that the people who used to be on the margin of American political life are now winning Democratic nominations to lead the largest cities in the country. The fringe has become the institution.
Stephen presses on the root cause. Who is to blame — the schools, the media, social media, the politicians? Ron points to the same source most honest analysts point to: the K-12 education system, but especially the college campus, where social pressure to conform to ideological orthodoxies is “positively brutal.” Even kids who come from intact homes with parents who’ve raised them well show up to a college campus and look like “absolute freaks” within a year.
Then Ron offers what may be the sharpest framework on modern belief he has shared in this interview: modern patriotism — and modern religion, and modern family loyalty — has been reduced to “favorite team” status. People are excited about America or excited about a country or excited about their religion the way people are excited about a sports team. “It doesn’t actually affect how you live your life. Then it’s just a thing, and it goes out the window the second something more cool or fun or pleasurable comes into the view screen.” When everything is a favorite team, nothing is actually a conviction.
