Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher is calling for immediate action after a deadly Fourth of July weekend that authorities say was linked to escalating Somali gang violence across the Twin Cities. Investigators say multiple shootings and at least one homicide were connected to Somali gangs, with law enforcement estimating there are now roughly 12 active gangs involving about 300 members throughout the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. According to the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, much of the violence is fueled by social media feuds, retaliation, and gang rivalries rather than traditional drug trafficking, raising concerns about the growing number of young people becoming involved. Sheriff Fletcher emphasized that the effort is not about targeting the Somali community but about preventing more youth from entering dangerous gang lifestyles and protecting innocent victims caught in the violence. Community leaders and law enforcement are now urging greater cooperation, parental involvement, and intervention programs as officials work to curb the surge in gang-related crime before more lives are lost.
