Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) resigned from Congress today — effective immediately — minutes before the House Ethics Committee was set to announce her punishment. We break down exactly what she did, why she quit, and why she’s still in serious trouble with the federal government.
Florida’s Division of Emergency Management overpaid Cherfilus-McCormick’s family healthcare company Trinity Health Care Services $5 million during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of returning it, prosecutors say she laundered the money through multiple bank accounts, spent over $100,000 on a 3-carat diamond ring, and funneled millions into her 2021 congressional campaign through straw donors. She won that election by five votes.
In March 2026, a rare bipartisan public Ethics trial found her guilty on 25 out of 27 charges. Facing near-certain expulsion, she resigned mid-hearing on April 21, 2026 — right as the punishment was about to be read.
Resigning doesn’t make the federal case go away. She still faces 15 counts including theft of government funds, money laundering, straw donor contributions, and conspiracy to file a false tax return. Maximum exposure: 53 years in prison. Federal criminal trial is scheduled for February 2027.
