Tiffany Cross filled in for Roland Martin this week, and she did exactly what I expected — gaslit Black America on the migrant detention story.
She gave you 32 deaths in ICE custody. She gave you 70,000 detainees. She gave you the “ICE is the Klan” framing.
She didn’t give you the math.
So I did.
Every year, between 6,000 and 10,000 US citizens die in American prisons. In Georgia alone — a state Tiffany Cross has roots in — roughly 300 US citizens died behind bars last year. That’s 10 times more than the entire national migrant detention death count.
Black Americans are 3-4 times more likely to be incarcerated than any other group. We are the population catching the most hell in these facilities. And the panel Tiffany Cross was on — which included Dr. Wen-Kuni Ceant, co-founder of Politicking — used “as a Haitian American, I feel…” as the moral authority of the segment while the population actually dying behind bars at the highest rates was nowhere represented at the table.
That’s the gaslight. Not the compassion for migrants. The substitution of one community’s lived experience for another’s data.
This isn’t anti-migrant. This is pro-us.
Stop using Black Americans to advocate for everybody else while pretending we’re not down there too.
