Tennessee redistricting hit the news this week and suddenly Black Democrats who’ve been silent for years found their voices. Justin Pearson out here giving “discount Malcolm Luther the King” speeches in the statehouse. Cory Booker pulled a 25-hour Spartacus routine. Jamal Bowman pulled a fire alarm. Suddenly everybody’s a freedom fighter.
But here’s the question nobody’s asking: where was this energy when Black women were dying in childbirth at third-world rates? Where was this fire when working-class Black men were getting displaced from jobs across this country? Where was the filibuster for the John Lewis Voting Rights Act in 2020?
I’ll tell you where it was. It was on the golf course with Roland Martin, hoping to catch a glimpse of Oprah at a benefit.
This isn’t about Black America losing rights. We’ve been losing rights for 20 years. This is about them losing their jobs. And now they want us to march, organize, and crash out on their behalf — when they wouldn’t crash out for us when it actually mattered.
