They Pushed Juneteenth To Erase Lincoln, and here is why — it is a political move, and once you follow the timeline the motive is obvious. Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president, signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. That is the document that declared the slaves free. Juneteenth — June 19, 1865 — is the day a Union general finally reached Galveston, Texas and enforced that freedom, two and a half years later. So why does the late day get the national holiday while the day freedom was actually declared barely gets mentioned? Because if you center the Emancipation Proclamation, you have to say out loud that a Republican freed the slaves, and that the Democratic Party was the party of slavery, the Confederacy, and segregation. The Angryman is going to say what the cookout won’t: they didn’t elevate Juneteenth to honor freedom, they elevated it to bury the man who signed it. And ask yourself who actually made Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021 — a Democrat president did. The same party that spent a century on the wrong side of this exact issue suddenly handed you a holiday that conveniently writes Lincoln and the Republicans out of the story and replaces “you were freed” with “you found out late.” The Angryman holds The Standard (the consistent application of accountability regardless of who is being judged), and The Standard says follow the timeline and follow the party history. There is nothing wrong with marking the end of slavery, but know what you are marking and who is handing it to you.
