Al Sharpton says there’s so much “hollering” in Mississippi that he must have “hit something.” Ben Crump says threatened lawsuits and cease-and-desist letters could be attempts to intimidate people who are merely exercising their First Amendment rights.
But there’s a rather enormous problem with that argument.
Defending your reputation is not evidence of guilt. And a question mark is not holy water.

We also examine DARVO — Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender — and how the framework helps explain a strategy where people seeking accountability are portrayed as aggressors while those facing criticism portray themselves as victims.
If you spend weeks raising public suspicions about identifiable human beings, you don’t get to clutch your pearls when those people hire attorneys.
Free speech matters.
So does accountability.
And a question mark doesn’t erase responsibility for what you communicate to millions of people.
