🚨 Stockbridge Mayor Jayden Williams is fighting for his political future as an independent investigation examines allegations involving city spending, his conduct in office and sexually suggestive communications with an 18-year-old high school student.
Williams made history when he was elected at just 22 years old, becoming the youngest mayor in Stockbridge history.
But only months into his administration, the young mayor became locked in an increasingly bitter battle with members of the Stockbridge City Council.
The council launched an independent investigation examining allegations including potential misuse of city-issued purchasing and fuel cards, city resources and other conduct. More than $4,000 in purchases and donations made using a city purchasing card have been part of the investigation.
But the controversy escalated after a police report revealed communications between Williams and an 18-year-old 11th-grade high school student.
According to the police report, the student told investigators that he first connected with Williams through social media after responding to a post concerning a political mentorship program.
Investigators described portions of their subsequent communications as sexually explicit or suggestive and said the student reported exchanging nude photographs with Williams through social-media platforms.
Williams’ attorney disputes aspects of that account, including whether the student was actually participating in the mentorship program.
Importantly, Stockbridge police said they found no evidence of criminal activity involving Williams, noting that the student was 18 and legally an adult.
However, investigators said the nature of the communications raised ethical and professional concerns because of the reported mentorship connection and the fact that the other individual was still a high-school student.
Williams denies wrongdoing and has pushed back aggressively against the investigation.
He has also sued the city after the council restricted several of his administrative privileges, arguing that council members lacked the authority to effectively strip him of mayoral powers before completing the investigation and providing the required hearing.
Now the controversy has become more than an investigation into one mayor.
It’s also a legal and political battle over whether the council has treated Williams fairly, whether individual council members can impartially judge the allegations against him, and whether the allegations ultimately justify sanctions or removal.
The underlying investigative hearing is currently expected to return September 12, following additional proceedings concerning whether Councilwoman LaKeisha Gantt should participate.
