Barack Obama is helping produce a documentary about Kwame Nkrumah, one of Africa’s most important revolutionary leaders. But there’s something about this that I find deeply ironic.
The documentary, The Eyes of Ghana, explores the life and legacy of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, through extraordinary historical footage captured by his personal cameraman, Chris Hesse.
Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, is involved as an executive producer, alongside a production team that includes YouTube personality IShowSpeed.
But here’s my question:
How do we reconcile a former American president helping tell the story of a Pan-African revolutionary whose government was overthrown in a CIA-backed coup in 1966?
Kwame Nkrumah wasn’t simply fighting for Ghana’s independence. He envisioned a politically and economically united Africa, free from foreign domination, neocolonialism, and Western interference.
In this video, we’re discussing:
The historical significance of Kwame Nkrumah and his vision for a United States of Africa.
America’s involvement in the political events surrounding his overthrow in 1966.
The irony of Barack Obama’s involvement in documenting Nkrumah’s legacy.
Whether Western institutions can authentically tell the stories of African revolutionaries.
Why African ownership, historical context, and control over our narratives matter.
I welcome the preservation of African history and the recovery of invaluable archival footage. However, I also believe we must critically examine who controls the narrative, how that history is presented, and what political realities may be overlooked.
Preserving African history is important. Controlling how African history is told is an entirely different conversation.
