Families of 9/11 victims and first responders are sending a direct message to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani ahead of the 25th anniversary September 11 memorial ceremony: please do not come. A coalition gathered outside New York City Hall and delivered a petition carrying more than 101,000 signatures urging Mamdani to stay away from the solemn Ground Zero commemoration. Family members argue that the annual 9/11 ceremony should remain focused on the victims, survivors, first responders, and grieving relatives rather than become surrounded by political controversy. Petition organizer Giovanni Galante, whose wife Grace was killed in the September 11 attacks, said families want to mourn without having a “circus around us.” Critics pointed to Mamdani’s political positions, associations, and appointments as reasons they believe his presence would be inappropriate, while emphasizing that their objections are based on his public actions rather than his background or faith. The growing backlash surrounding Zohran Mamdani and the 9/11 memorial is now putting additional attention on whether the mayor will honor the families’ request and stay away from the 25th anniversary ceremony.
