Detroit politics is getting messy—and I want you to follow the money. Abdul El-Sayed’s U.S. Senate campaign reportedly paid $82,500 to the Ecumenical Ministers Alliance, an organization led by influential Detroit pastor Rev. Horace Sheffield III, for strategic consulting. Sheffield has also publicly endorsed and promoted El-Sayed.
Why does that matter?
Because Horace Sheffield isn’t simply a pastor. He’s deeply connected to Detroit politics, leads the Michigan chapter of Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, and happens to be the father of Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield.
And that’s where this story gets even more interesting.
Mayor Sheffield is separately facing allegations from a former boyfriend that she strongly denies, while Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison has acknowledged personally calling activist Jahdante Smith and asking him to remove photographs of the mayor from Facebook. Smith later had his phone seized by Detroit police; the department says that seizure was part of an unrelated investigation.
