CULTURAL POLICING — Who Decides What Black Journalists Are Allowed to Say?

Is there an unwritten political and cultural code in Black journalism?
After watching Stephen A. Smith’s conversation with Jemele Hill and Cari Champion, I walked away believing the debate was about something much bigger than Stephen A.’s criticism of Black women. It raised serious questions about cultural policing, political ideology, media platforms, and who gets to determine the boundaries of acceptable Black journalism.

Stephen A. was questioned about appearing with Sean Hannity on Fox News and engaging conservative voices such as Ben Shapiro and Megyn Kelly. But should appearing on a conservative platform automatically call a Black journalist’s loyalty to the Black community into question?

And where is that same scrutiny when Black journalists take their arguments to progressive or Democratic-friendly platforms?
In this episode of The Publisher’s Desk, I examine the double standard and ask whether Black journalists should be free to criticize Democrats, Republicans, Black politicians and even other Black journalists without having their Blackness or commitment to the community questioned.

Disagreement is not betrayal. Accountability is not anti-Black. And journalism cannot survive an ideological loyalty test.

Are we protecting Black journalism—or policing it?
