“When people ask, “Why didn’t they just leave?” it usually means they don’t understand how cleverly abusive relationships are crafted. They start as a love story, one with moves and maneuvers to create a strong emotional bond, build trust and give the manipulative partner incredible control. We’ll expose the small moments that come first and the ploys that can quickly lead even clever people into a relationship that shrinks their world and leaves them feeling helpless.
This week I draw on my crucial Unmasking the Abuser work to mark the start on October 1st of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I’ll show how manipulation and control develop one intentional interaction at a time. We’ll look at early testing and training, the loss of confidence and support, the confusing return of affection, and what friends and family can do to help. You don’t need to label a person to recognize what’s going on and take it seriously.
