🔍 VIDEO SUMMARY:
Illinois could be headed for a historic political showdown as a growing movement to SPLIT Illinois into two states gains momentum, while neighboring Indiana explores absorbing Illinois counties that want to break away from Chicago’s political control!
Already, 33 Illinois counties have approved nonbinding separation referendums, with another 12 counties preparing to vote in November. The New Illinois movement argues that Chicago and Cook County dominate state politics, leaving residents throughout the rest of Illinois without meaningful representation.
Meanwhile, Indiana has established a commission to investigate the possibility of allowing Illinois counties to join the Hoosier State. But Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has dismissed the proposal as a political stunt, telling dissatisfied residents that if they want to leave Illinois, they should move.
New Illinois Chairman G.H. Merritt is also raising alarms about Illinois’ massive pension liabilities, mounting debt, high taxes, and struggling business climate. Supporters believe separating from Chicago could create an opportunity for lower taxes, fewer regulations, and greater political independence.
But there’s a major difference between the two proposals: one would create an entirely NEW STATE, potentially America’s 51st, while the other would transfer Illinois counties into Indiana. Both face significant constitutional and political obstacles, including approval from state lawmakers and Congress.
Could Illinois really split into two states? Will Indiana succeed in attracting disgruntled Illinois counties? And could Chicago survive financially if much of the rest of Illinois broke away?
We’re breaking down both proposals, the growing county revolt, and Pritzker’s response.
