Jemele Hill says capitalism is oppressive and tied to white supremacy. There’s just one awkward little problem: capitalism has been very, very good to Jemele Hill. During a CNN NewsNight exchange, Kmele Foster challenged Hill to explain exactly what private property, voluntary exchange and mutually beneficial trade have to do with white supremacy — and the conversation exposed a much bigger ideological problem.
Black Americans have spent generations being taught to associate capitalism with exploitation while treating government dependency and redistribution as compassion. Meanwhile, many of the very people selling that message are building businesses, selling books, monetizing podcasts and becoming wealthy inside the system they condemn.
In this episode, I explain why that contradiction matters, why slavery is not synonymous with voluntary free-market exchange, and how I learned the basic mechanics of capitalism when I started my first business at FIVE YEARS OLD.
