Kathy Hochul announced an initiative identifying more than 18,000 job openings with nearly 400 employers willing to hire migrants and asylum seekers who had obtained legal work authorization. That raises a separate policy question worth examining: What targeted strategies are New York State leaders using to address persistent employment challenges facing Black New Yorkers?
On this episode of Black Westchester, we examine the numbers, the policies, who qualifies for these programs, and whether New York’s workforce strategy is producing equitable opportunities for longtime communities across the state.
The question isn’t whether migrants should work. The question is whether government is showing the same urgency when Black New Yorkers need pathways to employment and economic opportunity.
