Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley scored a major upset in Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, narrowly defeating progressive Democratic Socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong despite polls showing Hong with a commanding lead shortly before Election Day. Crowley prevailed by just over 3,200 votes, roughly a 0.4% margin, after re-entering the race and gaining crucial support from outgoing Democratic Gov. Tony Evers. Hong faced renewed scrutiny during the campaign over controversial past positions and comments, including support for abolishing police and a pandemic-era call to “cancel Thanksgiving,” positions she later sought to distance herself from. Her defeat represents a setback for the Democratic Party’s progressive and democratic socialist wing, particularly after Hong had been viewed as the clear frontrunner heading into the Wisconsin primary. Crowley campaigned as a more moderate Democrat focused on affordability, education and jobs, positioning himself as a candidate capable of appealing to a broader coalition of Wisconsin voters. Crowley will now face Trump-backed Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany in the November general election in what is expected to be a closely watched battle for control of the Wisconsin governor’s mansion.
