The latest Nolan Wells press conference was supposedly about one thing: getting answers for a grieving family.
So why were we suddenly talking about Donald Trump, Democrats taking the House in November, the Congressional Black Caucus, voting rights, January congressional oversight, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Mississippi racism and the National Association of Black Journalists?
Because Al Sharpton may have said the quiet part out loud.
No crime has publicly been established in Nolan Wells’ death. No evidence has publicly established that his death was racially motivated. Yet Sharpton, Ben Crump and Congresswoman Lucy McBath repeatedly placed Nolan’s unresolved death inside a much broader racial and political narrative.
And when defamation lawsuits are threatened over potentially false accusations surrounding this case? Suddenly everybody is “just asking questions.”
Tonight, we’re going through the press conference, the contradictions, the Congressional Black Caucus’ demand for federal involvement, the threatened lawsuits—and the extraordinary moment Sharpton connected this case directly to Democrats taking control of the House in November.
The Wells family deserves answers.
But grief is not forensic evidence.
Questions are not conclusions.
And Nolan Wells’ race cannot become probable cause.
