The WNBA is imploding — and now even Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless have had enough.
This week, two of the biggest voices in sports media — guys who’ve spent their entire careers fighting for Black causes — went off on the WNBA. Stephen A. Smith called the league’s transgender eligibility mess “ridiculous” and said the league needs to make a decision and stop dodging the question. Skip Bayless said he’s so disgusted he can barely watch anymore — at the exact moment the league should be skyrocketing. When you lose those two, this isn’t a right-wing attack. It’s a league losing the people who wanted to love it.
It all comes as two former NBA players — Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White — declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft to test the league’s own rules. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s response? A memo and a meeting. That’s it.
And in the middle of all of it, Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington clotheslined Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham across the head on a clean fast-break layup — got ejected on a Flagrant 2, hit with a $1,000 fine — then posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE” and tagged the Fever. Minutes later, she posted “8/23,” the date of the rematch.
