The WNBA Turned On Sophie Cunningham!

Sophie Cunningham said she doesn’t think biological males should compete in women’s sports. She wasn’t hateful. She didn’t use derogatory language. The league turned on her anyway — her coaches, her own podcast co-host, and ESPN.

Then she took an elbow to the jaw on national television, and the review came back a defensive foul. No hostile act. On Sophie.

John Amanchukwu is joined by Auron MacIntyre, Blaze Media host and author of The Total State.

Minnesota’s Cheryl Reeve wore a “trans kids belong” shirt on the sideline. Golden State’s Natalie Nakase compared the issue to being criticized for her height and her ethnicity, and said sports is about belonging, inclusivity, and letting everyone be their authentic self — including trans women.

MacIntyre’s response inverts the whole premise. Sports isn’t about inclusion. It’s about exclusivity, excellence, and hierarchy — the entire appeal is watching people who are better than everyone else, and who earn praise precisely by leaving others behind. And a women’s league exists in the first place only because men and women are different. If women could compete in the NBA, they would. Erase the difference and you’ve erased the reason for the league.

But his real argument is about who this fight is actually for. Not professional athletes making a living playing a game — the girl in high school who has no other option, no other space, and no leverage at all.

Then the part nobody else is covering.

Title IX was written to protect women’s sports. So how did it become the instrument dismantling them? MacIntyre traces it back to the Civil Rights Act — arguing, alongside Christopher Caldwell’s The Age of Entitlement, that it became the de facto second constitution of the United States, and that the Supreme Court effectively rewrote it in Griggs v. Duke Power just seven years after passage. From women’s sports to Harvard admissions to a Biden-era ruling against Sheetz over criminal background checks, his case is that a law passed to make people equal is now routinely used to do the opposite.

His line: you could not have told a Black civil rights activist in 1965 that the solution to his problem would one day put men in girls’ sports. He’d have thought you were insane.

Also in this conversation: why he thinks a highly feminized space becomes a highly political one, why Caitlin Clark won’t touch the subject and what it costs an athlete who does, why nobody has to be talked into watching women’s volleyball or track, and what he says Americans have forgotten about violence — that anyone who’s actually experienced it understands the difference in strength immediately, and that believing otherwise is a luxury only a country detached from reality can afford.
