🔍 VIDEO SUMMARY:
A Baltimore arts organization is facing a growing backlash after firing its newly hired executive director following complaints that her hairstyle amounted to CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!

Kelly Carnes, a white woman with more than 21 years of experience in arts leadership and nonprofit management, was hired as executive director of the Baltimore Rock Opera Society (BROS) on September 8, 2026. But less than two weeks later, she was out of a job after volunteers complained about her wearing cornrows at an organization fundraiser.

Carnes says she had her hair braided while attending the Burning Man festival in Nevada to protect it from harsh desert conditions. She even says she consulted people of color before choosing the hairstyle. Nevertheless, after a video showing her wearing cornrows circulated online, the organization removed the footage, announced anti-racism training, and promised changes to its anti-discrimination policies.

Following a community town hall that Carnes says she was instructed not to attend, she received a termination notice stating that she was simply “not a good fit.”

Now the controversy could become a LEGAL NIGHTMARE for the Baltimore Rock Opera Society!

Attorneys are raising questions about whether the organization violated Maryland’s CROWN Act, a law designed to protect employees from discrimination involving natural and protective hairstyles, including braids, twists, and locks. Ironically, a law intended to combat racial discrimination could potentially become the basis for a discrimination claim brought by a white employee.

Meanwhile, the organization is experiencing a leadership crisis, with four of its six board members planning to depart at the end of 2026.

Was this a legitimate response to cultural appropriation concerns, or did an organization supposedly committed to diversity, inclusion, and freedom of expression engage in the very discrimination it claims to oppose?

In this video, we examine the firing of Kelly Carnes, the controversy surrounding cornrows and cultural appropriation, Maryland’s CROWN Act, the possibility of a wrongful termination lawsuit, and the growing backlash against the Baltimore Rock Opera Society.
