🔍 VIDEO SUMMARY:
Chicago homeowners are getting crushed by skyrocketing property taxes, while political elites and major corporations quietly receive massive tax breaks — and Mayor Brandon Johnson is out here bragging about how great Chicago’s economy is. 🤔
In this report, based on investigative journalism from CBS News Chicago’s Tara Molina, we break down how a hidden “burden shift” in Cook County is forcing everyday homeowners to subsidize billion-dollar commercial properties — including hotels and skyscrapers owned by some of the most powerful families in Illinois.
🔎 What’s really happening?
Large commercial properties are getting huge reductions in their assessed values, which means they pay far less in taxes. But the government still needs the money — so the difference gets dumped onto residential homeowners.
📈 The result?
The average Chicago homeowner is now paying about $700 more per year in property taxes.
Some families have seen their bills double — from $9,600 to over $19,000.
Thousands are at risk of losing their homes over unpaid taxes as low as $2,000–$3,000.
💰 Meanwhile, the biggest winners:
Trump Tower – $48 million tax reduction
Hyatt Regency (owned by Gov. JB Pritzker’s family) – $150 million reduction
Data center near McCormick Place – $80 million reduction
Crowne Plaza Greektown – $14 million reduction
According to the Cook County Assessor’s Office, nearly 250,000 households are now dealing with unsustainable tax increases. Assessor Fritz Kaegi compared the system to a group dinner where homeowners are stuck paying the bill while the wealthiest diners get discounts.
And yet, at the same time, Mayor Brandon Johnson continues to tout Chicago as if it’s in its strongest economic position ever — citing airport traffic, tourism rankings, and “growth.” But for working families, the reality looks very different.
On X, Illinois State Senator Darren Bailey called out the political hypocrisy directly, pointing to the Pritzker family’s Hyatt ownership as a prime example of how the system protects elites while hammering regular people with higher taxes.
This video breaks down:
How the Cook County Board of Review enables the burden shift
Why commercial tax appeals matter more than you think
How this system drives displacement and housing insecurity
And why Chicago’s “economic success” narrative doesn’t match reality
Is Chicago really booming — or are homeowners being sacrificed to protect the politically connected? 🏙️💸
