Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration just took another devastating blow. A bombshell email from former Human Relations Commissioner Nancy Andrade — obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request — accuses the mayor’s chief of staff Cristina Pacione-Zayas and chief equity officer Carla Cooper of lies, bullying, quid pro quo threats, and creating a hostile work environment.
At the center of it all? A report on the rise of anti-Semitic hate crimes across Chicago that Andrade says the mayor’s team tried to dilute — stripping references to Jewish lives and reframing the entire report into an “all lives matter” narrative. When Andrade pushed back, she says she was threatened: go along with the changes or lose your job.
This comes just days after Mayor Johnson fired Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Garien Gatewood and his deputy Manny Whitfield — both of whom made similar allegations about retaliation from the mayor’s inner circle. With historically low approval ratings, a city council rebellion, a $1.1 billion budget hole, and a growing list of officials walking out the door saying the same thing, Brandon Johnson’s grip on Chicago is slipping fast.
