The New Georgia Project ultimately admitted to the violations as part of a consent agreement, leading to the largest ethics fine ever imposed in Georgia history.
Abrams responded by calling the investigation a “partisan, performative hearing” intended to intimidate voting rights advocates. She says she will comply with the subpoena at a mutually agreeable date while continuing to argue the investigation is politically motivated.
The controversy adds another chapter to the long-running political battles surrounding Abrams, who twice ran for governor against Brian Kemp and became one of the most nationally recognized voting-rights activists in the country. Questions now remain over whether investigators believe Abrams herself had direct knowledge of the alleged violations, something the Ethics Commission says is still under review.
