Calumet City Mayor Thaddeus Jones went on camera to defend $81,000 in city credit card charges — and his first move was to tell the reporter to spell his name right. We’re not making this up.
WGN Investigates reviewed Jones’ city credit card statements going back to 2024 and found over $35,000 in restaurant charges — including Chicago Cut Steakhouse, Hooters, and Café Borgia — and more than $46,000 in travel expenses for himself and others. That includes a $17,000 trip to Washington D.C. with a $7,700 stay at the luxury Marriott Marquis and $2,600 at an upscale steakhouse. All on the city card. All in a city where 20% of residents live below the poverty line.
Jones declined multiple interview requests before the story aired. Then 30 minutes after it did — he sent an email threatening to pull $250,000 in park district funding from one of the whistleblowers. He later confirmed the email was real. His only defense? He says it was $100,000, not $250,000. That’s not a defense. That’s a confession with an asterisk.
And when he finally went on camera? He compared himself to Tiffany Henyard — by telling us he’s NOT her. We’ll let you decide how that landed.
The city clerk called the credit card his “personal purse.” City Council has now demanded receipts by mid-June. And Jones is already under federal investigation for tax issues tied to his campaign funds.
