🔍 VIDEO SUMMARY:
Baltimore’s financial and political problems are colliding in explosive fashion as new reports from the Inspector General’s office raise fresh questions about accountability inside City Hall. Critics say taxpayers are footing the bill while insiders continue receiving special treatment — all as the city faces a growing budget crisis.

A new investigation by Baltimore Inspector General Isabelle Cummings found that the city paid more than $312,000 in administrative leave to employees leaving city government since January 2024, including several members of Mayor Brandon Scott’s office. Some employees reportedly continued receiving pay and benefits even after formally leaving their positions, while accruing additional vacation and sick time on the taxpayers’ dime.

The report comes as the Inspector General’s office remains locked in a bitter legal fight with Mayor Scott’s administration over access to city records. The IG says Baltimore abruptly cut off direct access to critical data, forcing investigators to rely on subpoenas and alternative methods to continue ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, Mayor Scott is pushing legislation that critics say could weaken the independence of the city’s watchdog office.

At the same time, Baltimore’s worsening financial troubles are now under the microscope after a separate audit exposed major failures inside the city’s finance department. Auditors revealed millions in unpaid invoices, missing collections, unrecorded receivables, canceled invoices without approval, and widespread accounting failures that council members called “unacceptable.”

The shocking findings arrive just one week after reports that Baltimore’s budget deficit has ballooned to $64 million. City officials blamed staffing shortages, but critics argue the problems point to deeper issues involving oversight, transparency, and financial management inside city government.

Now, pressure is growing on Baltimore leadership as residents demand answers over missing money, unchecked spending, and ongoing attempts to limit the powers of the Inspector General’s office.
