You’re Celebrating The Day You Found Out, Not The Day You Were Freed — and that one sentence is the whole problem with Juneteenth. The slaves were declared free on January 1, 1863, when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth, June 19, 1865, is the day the news finally reached Galveston, Texas — two and a half years later, the very last place still holding people in bondage. So think about what we chose to throw a party around. We didn’t pick the day freedom was won. We picked the day the stragglers finally found out. The Angryman is going to break down why that distinction matters and who benefits from you missing it. When you celebrate Juneteenth instead of the Emancipation Proclamation, you quietly erase the fact that a Republican freed the slaves, and you bury the inconvenient history that the Democratic Party was the party of slavery, the Confederacy, and segregation. That is not an accident — that is the point. They would rather you celebrate the delay than the deliverance, because the delay does not have Lincoln’s name on it. And ask yourself why this country’s enemies hated Lincoln enough to put a bullet in his head, and why the 40 acres and a mule died the moment he did.
