Black American or African American? What Should We Really Be Called?

n this episode, we discuss the ongoing identity conversation around whether Black people in America should be referred to as Black American, African American, ADOS, FBA, or something else entirely. Names matter because they carry history, culture, politics, ancestry, and belonging. For some, African American connects us to the continent. For others, Black American speaks more directly to the unique history, struggle, culture, and nation-building experience of descendants of enslaved people in the United States.

This conversation is not about division. It is about clarity, respect, identity, and understanding the different ways people choose to define themselves. As the diaspora continues to reconnect with Africa, travel to the continent, claim citizenship, trace ancestry, and build cultural bridges, these conversations become even more important.

Danfo curates intentional travel experiences across Africa for people who want more than tourism. We create experiences rooted in culture, history, connection, and discovery.
